- Jaguar C-X75 re-born
- Prototype transformed into road-legal supercar
- Built by UK specialists CALLUM
- New lease of life for the ‘one that got away’
This isn’t any bespoke supercar, this is a reinvention of the iconic Jaguar C-X75, re-engineered and made road-legal for the modern era.
To tell the full story of this glorious machine, crafted by UK engineering firm CALLUM for one very discerning client, we’re going to have to rewind a decade.
Back in 2010, Jaguar stunned onlookers at the Paris Motor Show by revealing a two-seat hybrid supercar built in partnership with help from the Williams F1 team - the C-X75.
It was conceived as a 789 PS rocketship with a unique hybrid powertrain where tiny diesel-powered gas turbines fed power to four high-tech YASA electric motors.
By 2011 the project had been altered slightly, with a petrol engine now allied to the electric motors, rather than turbines, to develop 862 PS.
Despite the C-X75 being scheduled for a limited production run of 250 models, the entire thing was mothballed in 2012 due to the crippling global recession.
All was not entirely lost.
Some of the C-X75’s design elements - most notably the front end - were channelled into development of the Jaguar F-Type and the Jaguar I-Pace. It’s easy to see the influence the C-X75 had.
Meanwhile one of the prototypes that Jaguar did build (albeit powered by a traditional V8 engine…) was used in 2015 James Bond flick Spectre, driven by henchman and all-round baddie Mr. Hinx, played by Dave Bautista.
And so dreams of a road-going Jaguar C-X75 faded into memory… until now.
CALLUM, headquartered in Warwick, got hold of one of the C-X75 prototypes sold at auction and has taken it ‘to its ultimate road-going conclusion’ for its very happy owner.
Ian Callum, who led the Jaguar team that created the car in 2010 and is now design director and co-founder of CALLUM, said: “C-X75 was ‘the one that got away’ - a car brimming with unfulfilled potential. We’ve combined the customer’s wishes with carefully engineered solutions to bring C-X75 to the thoroughly satisfying conclusion it always deserved.”
A supercharged V8 engine is now mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission while there’s an advanced active aero package with airbrake.
While the exterior was already pretty jaw-dropping, CALLUM spent more than 1,000 hours perfecting the bodywork, giving it new carbon fibre accents and a polished metal grille. The cabin has also been fully uprated, with soft leather textures and bespoke sound system.
CALLUM isn’t forthcoming about power or acceleration figures, but with a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 under that sculpted body, we bet it ain’t slow.
