Seven-seat Hyundai Ioniq 9 unveiled

  • New Hyundai Ioniq 9 revealed
  • Major Kia EV9 rival
  • Will also take on the Range Rover
  • Lounge-like cabin gets reclining seats

This is the Hyundai Ioniq 9 - a luxury new fully-electric seven seater that’s set to arrive in 2025 with a range of up to 385 miles between charges.

The incoming Ioniq 9 is an obvious rival for the Kia EV9, with Kia being owned by the Hyundai Motor Group. The Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9 also share the same ‘E-GMP’ electric platform.

Yet the Ioniq 9 adopts a sleeker, more svelte shape than the futuristically-boxy Kia EV9.

And, like the EV9, the Ioniq 9 will also take on the likes of Range Rover and the Volvo EX90 as it targets the luxury end of the market - and families in need of three rows of seats.

Let’s start with some fast facts.

The Ioniq 9 will be available in three main guises - rear-wheel drive Long Range, all-wheel drive Long Range, and all-wheel drive Performance.

All are underpinned by a 110.3 kWh battery that accepts rapid 350 kW DC charging and which can be replenished from 10-80% in 24 minutes.

The entry-level Long-Range RWD gets a 218 PS electric motor and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in a leisurely 9.4 seconds. The Long Range AWD gets an additional 95 PS motor on the front axle drops the 0-62 mph sprint down to 6.7 seconds.

Meanwhile the 435 PS Performance variant will launch to 62 mph from a standstill in just 5.2 seconds - which ain’t bad for a car that’s a centimetre longer than the Land Rover Ranger (in standard wheelbase mode).

When it comes to range, that max figure of 385 miles being quoted by Hyundai is for the Long-Range RWD car.

The cabin features a flat floor that accommodates seating for six or seven occupants, depending on your needs, while massaging ‘Relaxation Seats’ in the first and second rows can fully recline and offer a leg rest for optimal comfort. Quick snooze while you’re recharging, anyone?

A sliding island provides plenty of storage and delivers a ‘walk-through front-row seating arrangement’, says Hyundai, while you also get swivel chairs, just like we’ve seen in the Kia EV9. There are gadget charging ports in all three rows and a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) socket in the boot.

Speaking of which, you get a 620-litre boot with all three rows of seats in place, or a gargantuan 1,323 litres of luggage with the third row folded flat.

There’s a panoramic curved display comprising twin 12-inch screens, a floating dashboard, slim air vents and ambient interior lighting which enhance the vehicle’s ‘futuristic’ interior atmosphere, according to Hyundai.

A streamlined exterior shape has been honed to improve aerodynamics while a boat tail rear pitches the Ioniq 9 squarely at the Range Rover. A sophisticated Chassis Domain Control Unit features dynamic torque vectoring for improved handling while lateral wind stability control boosts high-speed assurance.

A comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems includes forward collision-avoidance, lane keep assist and intelligent speed limit assist.

The Ioniq 9 will also be a capable tow car, able to lug up to 2,500 kg in ‘trailer mode’.

Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said: “Ioniq 9 embodies Hyundai Motor's unwavering commitment and confidence in electrification. Based on Hyundai Motor Group’s acclaimed Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), Ioniq 9 offers outstanding interior space, providing customers with unique value while solidifying our leadership in the global EV market.”

The plan is for the Hyundai Ioniq 9 to go on sale in Korea and the US in the first half of 2025 before being rolled out to other global markets, including the UK, later that year.
