Sporty makeover for Hyundai i20

Here’s a first look at the new and improved Hyundai i20, as the Korean manufacturer gives its hatchback an ‘elegant and sporty’ makeover.

The i20 sits slap bang in the middle of Hyundai’s range of ‘i’ cars - the smaller i10 and the larger i30.

Hyundai says the key pillars of all of its ‘i’ models are ‘quality, reliability, and practicality’ - and that’s why they make for such brilliant family cars.

Now the middle child of the trio has been treated to an update, just a few months after the i10 also received a refresh.

There’s a new front bumper and radiator grille, as well as a redesigned rear that boasts a new set of tail lights. There are also fresh 16 or 17 inch alloys.

Hyundai says the new i20 has a ‘sporty’ stance but still offers plenty of room for passengers and is also packing a 352 litre boot.

To compare that with rivals, the Volkswagen Polo gets a 351 litre trunk, while the SEAT Ibiza’s luggage space weighs in at 355 litres. So, the i20 is right up there with the best in class.

Some of the key creature comforts from the old model are carried over to the new one, including a large 10.25 inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charger, and over-the-air software updates.

The standard-fit safety features have also been boosted. The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system now detects cyclists, and Lane Following Assist (LFA) ensures that the vehicle stays in its lane.

Sitting at the heart of the i20 is a 1.0 litre petrol engine with efficiency-improving mild-hybrid tech. That ‘T-GDi’ engine is available with power of either 100 PS or 120 PS, and can be bolted to a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic box.

The new i20 isn’t available just yet, and we’ll bring you details of pricing and precise spec when it arrives. You can also expect an update for the range-topping model - the performance i20 N.

In the meantime you can lease the current generation Hyundai i20 with Select from just £250 per month*.
