The Honda Prelude is BACK - and it’s now a low-slung hybrid sports coupe.
The old Prelude had disappeared from UK forecourts by the beginning of the Noughties, much to the dismay of Honda enthusiasts.
When we last saw it, the Prelude was packing a 2.2-litre engine with 183 bhp and was wearing fairly angular looks, with a shark-nosed front end and squared-off rear.
But this new Prelude Concept is a different beast entirely, boasting much more in the way of curves while featuring a steeply-sloping roof.
We don’t yet know what power the updated Prelude will have but the smart money says it’ll get an uprated version of the 2.0-litre self-charging ‘e:HEV’ engine seen in Honda’s Civic and ZR-V.
The Prelude Concept will make its first public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from 11-14 July. Honda says it’s a shining example of how the Japanese firm can bring the ‘joy of driving’ to customers across Europe.
And it’s also being shown-off to celebrate 25 years of Honda hybrid technology - with the Honda Insight having paved the way back in 1999.
Tomoyuki Yamagami, Chief Engineer and Large Project Leader, Honda Motor, said: “The new Prelude not only marks the latest chapter in our ever evolving hybrid story, it is also the product of 25 years of pioneering hybrid research and development. Ensuring this model maintains its ‘sporty’ DNA by perfectly blending the efficiency and environmental advantages of electrified driving with an exhilarating experience behind the wheel – liberating users from their daily lives with increased driving pleasure.”
If the new Prelude makes it to full production, it'll compete with other sports coupes like the BMW M2 Coupe and the Porsche 718 Cayman.
