Ford is celebrating after its Puma crossover was named the best-selling car of 2023.
The loveable Puma knocked 2022’s most popular model - the Nissan Qashqai - down into second spot in the annual top 10 after recording some 49,591 registrations.
The Puma was also the best-selling vehicle in the UK overall, with more new car registrations than Britain’s most sought-after van; 40,865 Ford Transit Customs were delivered to customers in 2023.
And make no mistake, there’s a lot of love about a Ford Puma - a car you can lease with Select from £257 per month*.
We recently got behind the wheel of the Puma for aSelect review, and found it to be well worth the hype.
Ford says the mid-range ‘ST Line X’ trim was the sweet spot for Puma punters, while the most popular engine was the punchy 125 PS mild-hybrid.
What’s more, Ford is readying to reveal an all-electric Puma this year, with the battery-powered crossover becoming available to lease in 2025.
Lisa Brankin, Ford UK chair and MD, said: “I’m delighted that Puma was both the bestselling vehicle and car in the UK and Transit Custom was the best-selling commercial vehicle in 2023. This terrific achievement in 2023 is a great foundation for us to step forward into 2024 and roll out our electrification plan at pace in both the car and van markets.”
The UK’s most popular electric car in 2023 was the Tesla Model Y, which came fifth in the more general top 10.
Runner-up in the EV list was the multiple award-winning MG4, with the Audi Q4 e-tron in third place and the Tesla Model 3 in fourth.
Meanwhile, battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake reached a record volume - up by almost 50,000 units, with 314,687 new registrations, compared with 2022.
Overall, some 1.903 million new cars reached the road during 2023 - an increase of 17.9%, year on year, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
