Ford has unleashed a new rally-inspired version of its electric Mustang Mach-E - and it’s going into full production.
Cars wearing the famous Mustang badge have been around for almost six decades now.
And tradition tells us that ‘Stangs are much more at home in a drag race or going sideways in a drift than they are on a rally stage.
But that’s all about to change with the incoming Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally, which Ford says is being built for customers who come alive ‘where the tarmac ends and the dirt road begins’. It gets proper rally wheels, fog lights at the front, and a new rear wing.
There’s no word yet on what power the Mach-E Rally might get, with those details to be revealed further down the track.
But the regular, road-going Mach-E is available with muscle of up to 480 hp in ‘GT’ form, so you can expect the Mach-E Rally to be similarly potent.
The production-ready car - which Ford says is the first-ever, rally-inspired, five-passenger Mustang - was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will go on sale in Europe and the US.
Darren Palmer, Vice President, Electric Vehicle Programs at Ford Model e, said: “Mustang Mach-E took the freedom and fun of Mustang and made it free from emissions. Now with Mustang Mach-E Rally, we’re providing our customers the freedom to venture off the asphalt and beyond the beaten path.”
Ford is obviously no stranger to rallying know-how, with four World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ titles under its belt.
Meanwhile there’s a growing trend for off-road versions of desirable sports cars right now, with Lamborghini having recently launched the bonkers, go-anywhere Huracan Sterrato and Porsche unleashing its 911 Dakar (below).
