New Ford Mustang muscles-in!

It’s a memorable date for muscle car fans - because the new Ford Mustang is now available to order!

As before, the Mustang is packing a whopping great 5.0-litre V8 engine under its stretched bonnet.

And, once again, you’ll be able to lease the Mustang as either a GT Coupe or GT Convertible, with prices to buy outright beginning at £55,585.

Those Coupe and Convertible models boast power of 446 PS and 540 Nm of torque, which is slightly down compared to the outgoing model but which is still enough to thunder your forwards from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds.

What’s new for 2024 is the aggressive ‘Dark Horse’ Mustang, described by Ford as ‘the most track-ready series production Mustang’ in history.

The Dark Horse (below) is dripping in performance extras and gets more power at 453 PS while the 0-62mph acceleration time drops to just 4.4 seconds.

Meanwhile just about everything about the updated Mustang is new, from the sculpted, sporty, athletic exterior to the tech-heavy cabin.

There are up to six drive modes - including ‘Track’ - while Ford says it has enhanced the Mustang’s suspension geometry to reduce understeer.

Rev-matching is standard on the Mustang GT, which ‘delivers even more precision and refinement for the driver’ when they’re shifting down through the gears.

Speaking of which, a 10-speed auto box is available alongside a traditional six-speed manual transmission.

Standard-issue kit includes 19-inch alloys, Brembo brakes with 19-inch callipers, a limited-slip differential, and an active valve exhaust system so that you can dial-back the noise to avoid deafening the neighbours.

Ford’s active ‘MagneRide’ suspension set-up is an optional extra.

Meanwhile there’s also a ‘Performance Electronic Parking Brake’ so you can get your drift on - and which Ford reckons is suitable for both ‘novices’ and ‘expert drivers’ when you’re on the track.

The Mustang’s interior has also been heavily refreshed.

There’s a thicker new flat-bottomed steering wheel, a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 13.2-inch ‘SYNC 4’ infotainment system that’s angled towards the driver.

A swanky B&O sound system with a subwoofer comes as standard, as does wireless charging and over-the-air software updates.

There’s a full suite of driver assistance and safety tech, including intelligent adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, and evasive steer assist.

When it comes to the aforementioned Mustang Dark Horse, the range-topping Pony replaces the outgoing, top-spec ‘Mach 1’ in the line-up.

Besides its mean and moody good looks and added power, the Dark Horse comes with a 3D-printed titanium shift ball, a flat-shift function that allows the driver to manually row through the gears without releasing the accelerator, and a ‘Performance Package’ fitted as standard.

An upgraded Torsen limited-slip diff improves acceleration and corning prowess, while there’s also an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a transmission oil cooler for the optional automatic transmission, a lightened radiator with greater heat soak rejection, plus more powerful cooling fans to improve endurance and recovery, and a rear axle cooler.

A Ford spokesperson tells us: “The Performance Package also includes unique chassis tuning, larger rear anti-roll bars and heavy-duty front dampers, Brembo six-piston front callipers with 390 mm front discs, strut tower brace, rear K‑brace, staggered fitting wheels (19 x 9-inch front and 19 x 9.5-inch rear wheels), and Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tyres. Uniquely-tuned MagneRide active suspension comes as standard for optimised performance in road and track conditions.”

The Dark Horse gets its own unique paint option - Blue Ember metallic - which ‘emits a warm glow when it catches the light’, says Ford.

Prices for the Dark Horse begin at £65,585 - and we’ll bring you leasing prices for all Mustang variants as soon as they arrive in the coming days!

Jon Williams, general manager, Ford Blue, Europe, reveals: “New Mustang is everything that our customers expect from an undisputed automotive icon – and then some. Surprising, connected technology really complements and elevates performance enhancements that will win the hearts of a whole new generation of drivers.”
