Sharper styling and better tech for new VW T-Roc

One of the best compact SUVs on the market has just got even better - take a look at the updated new Volkswagen T-Roc.

The T-Roc comes in three distinct guises - the regular T-Roc, the T-Roc cabriolet, and the sporty T-Roc R hot-SUV. And whichever one you go for as a lease customer, you’re on to a winner.

VW says one million T-Roc units have sold worldwide within just four years of launching, making it a massive success story for the German manufacturer.

This new overhaul - which includes stylish design tweaks as well as the introduction of sophisticated tech - might tempt even more customers away from rivals like the Audi Q2 or MINI Countryman.

Let’s start with the one you really want - the sporty, performance-infused T-Roc R.

There’s an R-specific exterior and interior, the latter of which now enjoys a new sports leather steering wheel with touch controls as well as a model-specific R button for direct access to driving profile selection.

The R also comes with an extremely punchy 300 PS four-cylinder petrol engine that’s married to ‘4MOTION’ all-wheel drive and unlocks a 0-62mph sprint time of less than 5 seconds.

And the way the R looks is important - because it now has even more of an influence on the 'R-Line' models. Those variants now get a striking new bumper design, a multifunction sports steering wheel with touch control, driving profile selection, progressive steering and sports running gear

Meanwhile there are nips and tucks across the range.

Exterior wise, the biggest changes to the regular T-Roc come in the form of new LED matrix headlights and an illuminated radiator grille strip that is available as an option.

Five new colours of exterior paint and newly designed 17 and 19-inch alloy wheels provide lease customers with even more opportunities to customise their car.

In the cabin, there’s an updated dash panel, a tablet-like infotainment screen, and a digital instrument cluster as standard.

And perhaps the most important change to the T-Roc is how it’s now available with VW’s ‘IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist’ system as well as Predictive Cruise Control.

In case you’re wondering, the IQ.DRIVE tech is a semi-autonomous driving assistant that can support you with steering, accelerating, and braking within your lane - while you keep your hands on the steering wheel.

A VW spokesperson adds:

“By integrating the signals from the front camera, as well as GPS and map data, the vehicle control system can incorporate local speed limit information, town boundary signs, junctions and roundabouts.”

The new T-Roc Cabriolet features an electrically operated, three-layer, fabric soft top that can be opened in under nine seconds.

Meanwhile there’s a great choice of both petrol and diesel engines, with 4MOTION available on the more powerful units.

Arguably the pick of the bunch is the potent 2.0 TSI 4MOTION, which has power of 190 PS, comes mated to a 7-speed DSG box, and will still return almost 45 mpg.

The new T-Roc and new T-Roc Cabriolet are available for order, while the new T-Roc R will hit roads in the spring of 2022.
