Select Car Leasing is the Principal Partner of Reading F.C, and Select also proudly lends its name to the club’s ground.
So, as the Royals prepare to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in this weekend’s FA Cup Fourth Round clash, we thought we’d take a look at what a road trip from Berkshire to Stretford might look like.
The game kicks off at 8pm on Saturday evening, January 28th - televised live on ITV4 - which means you’ve got plenty of time to make the most of the day.
And there are plenty of pit-stops along the way from south to north, as you stop off at locations that are just perfect for discerning petrolheads.
You’ll also find some handy information below about some of the best places to charge an electric vehicle EV), too.
Silverstone Circuit (Northamptonshire)
Heading 70 miles north from the Select Car Leasing stadium will see you reaching the historic Silverstone Circuit. And the good news is that it’s well worth a visit, even when there’s no race event - and races don’t actually begin until February.
The state-of-the-art Interactive Museum features everything from Formula 1-inspired artwork to motion racing simulators. Strap yourself in and take an open or closed-wheel car for a spin around this legendary racetrack.
Electric charging: There are EV charging points located in Car Park 49, and which are part of the ‘bp pulse’ EV charging network.
British Motor Museum (Warwickshire)
Located around 30 miles to the west of Silverstone, and just off the M40 near Gaydon, you’ll find the British Motor Museum.
It’s home to more than 400 classic cars, and there are free tours, too.
What cool stuff is there to look at? Well, you’ll find a treasure trove of prototype and concept vehicles that never quite made it into production - including the Triumph Lynx and the MG EX-E.
There’s also a ‘Film & TV Cars’ exhibit, which includes a bonkers ‘Land Rover City Cab’ from 1995 blockbuster Judge Dredd and a replica of the DeLorean from Back to the Future 2.
Electric charging: If you’ll be arriving in an EV, the British Motor Museum has six charging points to the rear of the visitor car park, two of which have a 22kw charging socket and the rest have 7kw charging sockets. There are also four charging points at the Conference Entrance located at the back of the Museum building, each with 7kw charging sockets.
National Motorcycle Museum (Birmingham)
A short 30 mile hop from the British Motor Museum, interests turn from four wheels to two.
The National Motorcycle Museum, located near Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, has a collection of more than 1,000 bikes, all lovingly restored to the manufacturers’ original specifications.
You can book a guided ‘Highlights’ tour and there are motorcycles dating from the late 1800s, all the way through to powerful modern superbikes.
You can even purchase bikes from the collection if you’re feeling flush!
Electric charging: There are 10 charging points, all with 2kw sockets.
Oulton Park (Cheshire)
Oulton Park, located near Tarporley, Cheshire, is just a short detour from the M6 as you get closer to Manchester.
There are no real attractions there, so to speak, but it’s a location which in-the-know locals head to when they want their fill of racing without the big crowds.
Oulton Park holds regular track days - and there’s one on Saturday 28th - where drivers bring their own cars to the track to test their mettle.
Spectators are welcome, there’s ample parking, and the food in the cafe is bang on, too. There’s even an adventure playground for the kids.
Electric charging: EV charging is slightly limited at Oulton Park, but there’s plenty of options at the Asda superstore in nearby Winsford.
Manchester Museum of Science and Industry
Before you head to your seats at Old Trafford, there might just be enough time to sample the delights of the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, located in the heart of the city.
It’s dedicated to exploring the ‘ideas that changed the world’, particularly innovations that began in Manchester and went on to conquer the globe.
One of the best exhibitions for petrolheads is the one that looks at Rolls-Royce, a firm that started life in Manchester, the result of a partnership between Henry Royce, an expert engineer, and Charles Rolls, a motorcar pioneer.
The museum holds one of the very first Rolls-Royce motorcars ever produced, and one of only three remaining of this type.
Electric charging: Nearby Liverpool Road has EV charging options, including rapid charging at up to 50 kW.
