- Ferrari F80 hybrid hypercar revealed
- Launched to mark Ferrari’s 80th anniversary
- Limited to just 799 examples
- Priced from around £3m each
This is the aerospace-inspired new Ferrari F80 - and it’s extreme in every way imaginable.
First there’s the performance figures, and it’s safe to say that the F80 is not your typical plug-in hybrid.
A relatively dinky 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 is borrowed from F1 and generates 900 hp on its own while three electric motors and a 2.3 kWh battery produce another 300 hp to deliver a grand total of 1,200 hp.
That makes it ‘the most powerful road car ever to come out of the gates of the Ferrari factory’, the firm tells us.
That’s not as potent as the recently-launched McLaren W1 but it does give the F80 more oomph than the Ferrari LaFerrari, the car it replaces in the Italian manufacturer’s line-up.
The F80 is capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 2.15 seconds and on to a top speed of 217 mph. The F80 will also launch from zero to 124 mph in an astonishing 5.75 seconds.
Unlike the McLaren W1, the F80 is all-wheel drive. And unlike the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, there’s no eDrive mode with the F80 so it can’t be driven using electricity alone.
Besides the performance, the next thing to make jaws drop is the way the F80 looks - and it’s safe to say the design here is something of an evolution for Ferrari. The manufacturer itself describes the F80 as a ‘radical change in the visual language of the marque’.
F1 racing cars are a big influence, from the carbon-fibre chassis to the composite tub, while Ferrari also talks about the influence of aerospace design.
The black horizontal strip that runs across the front of the car is particularly eye-opening, with the headlamps concealed in a ‘visor’ element. That’s a deliberate tactic to avoid the ‘anthropomorphic’ effect where the front lights come to look like human eyes.
Butterfly doors give a sense of drama, as on the LaFerrari, while the rear engine cover gets six distinctive slots venting hot air from the V6 underneath.
A huge active rear wing also steals the show and helps contribute to a whopping 1,000kg of aero downforce.
For all the F80’s extremes, Ferrari reckons the F80 is a car to be savoured and enjoyed as much as possible, coming with ‘uncompromising levels of usability on the road, where it can be driven with ease’.
To that effect, the two-seat F80’s cabin, while narrow and compact, is described as ‘comfortable’ while the passenger seat is fixed to the chassis and positioned further back than the driver, which helps make the most of the available space.
The Ferrari F80 is priced from around £3m each - with each of the 799 models already allocated to a specific client.
