If you’re in the market for a premium, flagship, all-electric executive saloon, your choice is no longer limited to the big German manufacturers - because the sumptuous Genesis Electrified G80 is cementing itself as a serious player in the market.
Genesis is the upmarket division of South Korea’s Hyundai, and it’s a manufacturer making big inroads into the UK’s motoring masses.
Earlier this month Genesis opened a dedicated ‘Studio’ in London’s iconic Battersea Power Station in order to better showcase its entire range.
That line-up includes pure-electric models such as the Electrified GV70 SUV and the battery-powered GV60 compact crossover.
This month has also seen an eye-catching new trim level added to the traditionally-fuelled G80 saloon - a petrol sibling to the Electrified G80 - in the form of the G80 ‘Sport’.
The new Sport model offers power of 304 hp, the option of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and a sportier exhaust.
But it’s the Electrified G80 that sits at the top of the Genesis tree - and here’s everything you need to know about it.
What’s good about the Genesis Electrified G80?
Firstly, the way it looks. With that huge front grille and lines that wouldn’t look amiss on a luxury yacht, the Electrified G80 is packing real road presence.
Large 19 inch alloys complete the look, while another nice touch is the charging door discreetly hidden in the upper right area of the grille, rendered invisible when closed, which just adds to the Electrified G80’s super-sleek design.
While the interior is also sumptuous, it’s also kind to the planet. Recycled birch wood is used in the dash and console and there’s also ‘eco-friendly’ Nappa leather that’s been dyed using pine and linseed oil.
What range does the Genesis Electrified G80 have?
At the heart of the Electrified G80 is a large 87.2 kWh battery that gives it a range of up to 323 miles. How does that compare to the rivals? Well, the BMW i4 can travel up to 365 miles between charges while the Mercedes-Benz EQE can cover up to 384 miles. The EQE does, however, command a higher price tag than the Electrified G80.
When it comes to charging, the G80 EV can rapid-charge up to 350 kW, which means the battery can be taken from 10-80% in just 22 minutes.
It’s always good to remember that because there are zero emissions at the tailpipe with an Electrified G80, business lease customers can also expect a low 2% Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax bracket.
How does the Genesis Electrified G80 perform?
For a large, heavy limo that’s positively festooned in bling, the Electrified G80 can’t half shift. You can expect power of 364 bhp and 700 Nm of torque, channelled through dual motors on the front and rear axles. And it means the Electrified G80 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds. To put that into perspective, it means that the battery-powered G80 is quicker off the mark than the high performance Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.
While you’ll see the world rushing by your window, you won’t hear it, thanks to an insulated interior and active road noise cancelling technology.
It should also offer a refined ride quality, too, thanks to a sophisticated adaptive suspension system with ‘Preview’, which enables the Electrified G80 to detect upcoming lumps and bumps in the road before adjusting the damping force accordingly.
What equipment do you get as standard with the Genesis Electrified G80?
Lease customers can enjoy a large 14.5 inch infotainment touchscreen with sat nav, heated leather steering wheel, aluminium trim throughout the cabin, as well as driver assistance systems such as smart cruise control, lane keep assist, highway driving assist, and front and rear parking sensors.
You also get an upmarket sound system from American audio specialists Lexicon.
How much does the Genesis Electrified G80 cost?
The Electrified G80 begins at £65,805 to buy outright. That means it’s a potentially cheaper option than the £72,590 Mercedes-EQE, the £83,285 Audi e-tron GT, the £75,500 Porsche Taycan or the Tesla Model S - which starts at £94,990.
It also finds itself in a price bracket just above the BMW i4, which costs from £52,575, or the new £54,995 Hyundai Ioniq 6 ‘First Edition’ models.
At the time of writing, you can lease an Electrified G80 from around £953 per month* with Select.
While there’s just one trim level - ‘Luxury’ - you can increase your monthly leasing fee slightly by adding the ‘Innovation’ pack, which brings you goodies such as a head-up display, blind-spot view monitor and the semi-autonomous ‘Highway Driving Assist II’ system that you’ll also find in the Hyundai Ioniq 6.
Another nice option is the ‘Solar Roof Pack’, which fixes solar panels to the roof to extend your range and which also makes sure your battery is never discharged completely.
