More affordable BMW i4 joins the range

The all-electric BMW i4 just got more affordable - thanks to the introduction of a new ‘eDrive35’ model.

The i4 is a premium battery-powered saloon from BMW which sits a rung-down from the flagship i7 and rubs shoulders with the German firm’s iX1 SUV.

It’s also a rival to the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2.

Up until now the BMW i4 was only available in ‘eDrive40’ form, or as a performance i4 M50 variant with a colossal power output of 551 PS.

But a new powertrain is now muscling-in on the action in the form of the more wallet-friendly eDrive35.

While range between charges is slightly lower than the eDrive40 - up to 299 with the ‘35’ compared with up to 366 miles for the ‘40’ - the asking price is almost ten grand cheaper, a reduction that will be reflected in leasing prices, too.

The eDrive35 is equipped with a slightly smaller 70.2 kWh battery compared with the 40’s 83.9 kWh unit, but there’s still plenty of get up and go.

You can expect power of 290 PS, which drives the rear wheels, and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of just 6.0 seconds.

When it comes to charging, BMW says the i4 eDrive35 supports rapid charging at speeds up to 180 kW, while using a regular home wallbox will see the energy fully replenished in around 7 hours.

The good news for lease customers is that while the eDrive35 is well priced, it’s also well equipped.

It gets BMW’s twin screen Curved Display and infotainment system, as found in the iX and iX1, as well as the Operating System 8, which is not only fully-connected but uses swarm data to keep you safe and has ‘learning intelligence’ that will, among other things, get to know your favourite routes.

There are two trim levels available - Sport and M Sport.

The entry-level Sport offers 18 inch alloys, LED headlights and heated front seats.

The M Sport level adds more sporty exterior styling as well as unique alloys, an M Sport leather steering wheel, and Alcantara upholstery in the cabin.

Steve Roberts, General Manager, Corporate Sales, BMW UK, said:

“Following the huge success we have seen with BMW i4 in the Corporate and Fleet markets since launch, we are very pleased to bring the eDrive35 model to the UK portfolio. We’re offering this model in Sport and M Sport trims, which both include an impressive level of standard equipment, including 18” alloy wheels, alongside a range of up to 299 miles. This latest model to join the i4 range will make electric driving accessible to even more of our customers.”

It’ll be available to lease imminently - so watch this space.

Having never leased a car before I was a bit anxious and had so many questions. My contact was really helpful and took her time to explain everything in detail. I missed out on the car I wanted but she sourced something better and it met my budget. The car was delivered and I LOVE it
