- New Denza Z concept revealed
- Electric sports car with massive rear wing
- Denza is owned by China’s BYD
- Denza set to launch in the UK later this year
This is the scorching-hot new Denza Z - and the Porsche-rivalling electric sports car could soon be headed to Europe.
The great and good of the automotive world flocked to China this week for the Auto Shanghai 2025 international car show.
Manufacturer BYD (already available to lease here in the UK) was there showcasing some of its incoming new models, including an eye-catching ‘Wagon’ estate variant of the BYD Seal (below).
What you might not realise is that BYD also owns some other brands, including the off-road focused Fangchenbao, the high-end Yangwang, and the innovative Denza.
Back in February this year, Denza announced its intention to launch in Europe after making a splash at the Milan Design Week in Italy. A full-on UK launch is also widely-tipped, with the sleek Denza Z9 GT (pictured below) - a Porsche Taycan competitor - likely to be the first car we’ll see here in Blighty.
And now Denza has thrown the sheets off its ‘Z’ concept - a full-blown sports coupe. Not a bad way for a brand to announce itself.
The Denza Z has been created to ‘deliver peak levels of performance, technology and driver enjoyment’, the firm says.
The exterior bears more than a passing resemblance to the Porsche 911 while there’s also hints of the Lotus Emira in the design.
There’s no word yet on power or battery size, but the Denza Z9 GT offers a colossal 952 PS, so you can expect the Z to trump that.
There’s a huge adjustable rear wing to improve downforce and handling, carbon fibre bucket seats, and a carbon fibre dashboard.
The Z also boasts a sophisticated steer-by-wire system which enables it to have a fold-away steering wheel - handy for if you need to stop and get the laptop out en route as it frees up extra space in the cabin.
Denza says the Z features a ‘Magnetorheological Body Control System’. It’s a clever bit of tech that uses magnetic fields to alter the viscosity of the suspension damping fluid - making subtle adjustments in under 10 milliseconds - as it seeks to find a perfect balance between agility with comfort.
It can also be paired with predictive terrain scanning to ensure sharp cornering, stable braking and a smooth ride.
Will the Denza Z ever make it to full production - and will we see it on UK roads? Well, the Z is just a concept for now, and not all Denzas will leave China, but it’s one to keep a close eye on, for sure.
Elsewhere at the Auto Shanghai 2025, BYD’s Yangwang also gave us a look at the incoming U8L (below), a premium six-seat SUV which ‘caters to the needs of high-end users’.
Yangwang is another BYD sub-brand that could well make it to Europe so, again, watch this space.
