This is the future of urban motoring according to car manufacturer CUPRA - and it could be heading to UK roads by 2025.
The ‘UrbanRebel’ is an eye-catching new fully-electric concept that’s being teased by the Spanish heavyweights.
And while it’s being presented as a no-holds-barred race car here, with some heavy video game styling thrown in for good measure, CUPRA is confident it’ll ultimately translate to the ‘design language of the future street-car’.
Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Volkswagen Group-owned CUPRA, adds:
“The urban electric car is a key strategic project not only for our company, but also for the Volkswagen Group, as our aim is to produce more than 500,000 urban electric cars per year in Martorell for different Group brands. The urban electric car will democratise and make accessible electromobility to the masses.”
If it does indeed become a reality, the UrbanRebel will be built on VW’s MEB short platform, which is already being successfully exploited in cars like the VW ID.3 and ID.4.
It could be pretty rapid, too. CUPRA is promising peak power of 320kW - ie, 420hp - and a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.2 seconds - which makes it as quick as a Porsche Taycan Turbo.
The UrbanRebel also promises ‘bold and sharp looks’.
At the front, a shark nose is also complemented by new triangular headlamps, while a wrap-around window graphic is said to generate the same visual effect as a racing helmet, giving ‘continuity between the windows around the whole car to deliver the effect of a floating roof’.
At the rear, CUPRA has borrowed bits and pieces from the CUPRA Formentor SUV as well as giving it a rear spoiler that wouldn’t look amiss in the wildly-popular online video game series Rocket League.
With a total length of 4,080mm, a width of 1,795mm and a height of 1,444mm, it’s roughly the same size as the current VW Polo.
CUPRA’s Wayne Griffiths adds:
“The CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept is a radical interpretation of the company’s urban electric car, due to be launched in 2025. This racing concept gives an idea of the design language of the future street-car and will inspire its creation.”
The CUPRA UrbanRebel Concept will be unveiled at the pre-opening of the new CUPRA City Garage in Munich, which runs from 7-12 September.
We’ll bring you further details as soon as we get them.
