The razor-sharp Cupra Born has beaten electric rival the Volkswagen ID.3 to the ‘Best electric family car’ title at a top industry awards bash.
The annual What Car? Electric Car of the Year 2022 Awards celebrate the very best electric and hybrid vehicles in the UK.
And it was the Born, made available to lease in April this year, that triumphed in the ‘family’ category ahead of Volkswagen Group stablemate the ID.3.
The ID.3 and the Born are closely related - sitting on the same electric platform and targeting the same sorts of lease customers.
But the Born was picked ahead of the ID.3 by What Car? Magazine’s journalists, who praised it for being ‘strong on practicality, comfort, range, value for money and even performance’.
The Born is styled more aggressively and sits lower than the ID.3 yet still offers a plush ride across Britain’s potholed roads, What Car? says.
There are a few different Born variants available, covering ‘V1’ to V3’ trim levels as well as two different battery sizes, 58 kWh or 77 kWh.
And it’s the V2 Born with the 58 kWh battery and 204 PS of power that What Car? sees as something of a sweet spot in the range - providing 257 miles of range between charges as well as 100 kW rapid-charging capabilities that take the battery from 10-80% full in around 30 minutes. Make sure you're getting the most out of every charge by taking a look at our guide to picking your ideal EV charger.
When comparing the Born with the ID.3, the What Car? judges add:
“Subtle steering and suspension tweaks make the Born sharper and more fun to drive, albeit at the cost of a marginally firmer ride. It’s nicer inside, too, with smarter materials (including tactile Alcantara) throughout. Plus, it has a better infotainment system, with a bigger touchscreen and a more intuitive operating system.
In mid-range V2 trim, the Born is packed with kit and should hold its value better than the Leaf and ID 3. It really is too cool for school (as the kids probably don’t say these days).”
You can lease a Cupra Born with Select from around £369 per month.
