What do you get if you cross an estate with a saloon and then an SUV?
The answer is the distinctive new Citroen C5 X, which is set to hit forecourts later this year and promises to be one of the most comfortable rides on the market.
Citroen says the C5 X is a ‘flagship’ of the range, and influenced by the design of the classic, mould-breaking ‘CX’, which sold between 1974 and 1991.
That means a long bonnet, high waistline and a distinctive muscular ‘kick’ above the rear wheels. Citroen even describes it as a ‘sleek fastback’.
And the firm has gone big on giving drivers the most lush, serene ride possible, with a new ‘Advanced Comfort’ active suspension system as well as laminated front and rear windows to drown out the sound of road and wind noise.
Speaking of the suspension, Citroen says it’ll soak up ‘potholes, kerbs and speed bumps’ and adds: “Offering a choice of three modes, the suspension control system enhances the effectiveness of the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions by softening the suspension under certain conditions to create the sense that the car is ‘gliding’ over the road or sharpening the set-up for even greater control and precision when cornering.”
Meanwhile the cabin comes with ultra-cushioned seats - with special padding that works like a mattress topper on a bed - and ‘exceptional’ levels of legroom.
With 545 litres of boot space, which stretches to a vast 1,640-litres with the rear seats folded, the C5 X could be the executive cruiser you never knew you needed.
While details are currently thin on the ground ahead of the car’s proper release later this year, we know the C5 X will come as either a traditional petrol or a plug-in hybrid.
The latter of which offers healthy power of 225hp, zero-emissions motoring at speeds of up to 84mph, and an electric range of up to 31 miles.
If that all sounds pretty stress-free, the interior and driver assistance tech is also likely to have you sitting back in contentment.
There’s a new infotainment interface that features a large central 12" high definition touch screen, natural voice recognition and a customisable display with widgets, just like you get on a tablet.
New C5 X is also at the cutting edge of technology when it comes to radar, cameras and sensor-based systems.
The ‘Highway Driver Assist’ offers ‘semi-autonomous level 2 driving’, combining Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Keeping Assist, so that ‘the driver no longer needs to manage speed or trajectory as the vehicle takes care of all these functions’.
Also available is the Top 360 Vision Surround View Camera technology that makes manoeuvring easier by displaying an overview of the outside environment on the touchscreen.
Vincent Cobée, Citroën CEO, boasts:
"With the new C5 X, Citroën has created an ambitious, large touring vehicle, a real tool for winning over customers who are increasingly inclined to explore the world. An audacious and original proposal that truly embodies all of Citroën's expertise: innovation, care and above everything well-being."
New Citroën C5 X will be on sale in the UK in late 2021.
