A guide to the most affordable MPVs to lease

After almost ten year of ferrying countless families across the length and breadth of the UK, the popular Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer is being put out to pasture by the French firm.

It’s an MPV first launched in 2014 and which not only had seats for up to seven people, but also proved affordable as an MPV.

If you had your eye on one, and are now left scratching your head about which people-carrier to plump for, worry not, because there are plenty of other alternatives out there.

And this guide is here to talk you through your options.

Speaking about the Grand C4 SpaceTourer going to the great parking garage in the sky, Citroen says production won’t actually end until July, so you’ve still potentially got time to lease one.

A spokesperson for Citroen adds that the Grand C4 SpaceTourer offered customers ‘an attractive and modern design and has earned a reputation for its unrivalled comfort, internal versatility and space, as well as its exemplary modularity and light cabin thanks to the long windscreen and panoramic glass roof’.

So, if you’re re-thinking your plans based on the announcement, here’s some other MPVs that are well worth a look:

Citroen e-Berlingo XL

Yep, the Grand C4 SpaceTourer isn’t the only MPV in the Citroen stable.

And while the regular, all-electric e-Berlingo just has the five seats, the larger ‘XL’ variant is a full-blown seven seater.

In the most affordable ‘Feel’ trim you get automatic headlights, rear parking sensors,

sliding doors on both sides, tray tables on the back of the front seats and a retractable parcel shelf.

Meanwhile a 50 kWh battery translates to decent power of 135 PS and a range of up to 173 miles on a single charge. The e-Berlingo is also a bit of a looker, too, with funky modern styling.

Volkswagen Touran

The Touran MPV has been around for almost two decades, and there are good reasons why it’s got so much staying power.

A seven seater as standard, base SE models come loaded with everything from parking sensors front and rear to adaptive cruise control.

Roof rails are a welcome bonus, too.

The 1.5 litre petrol engine is also a winner, offering power of 150 PS and wallet-friendly fuel economy in excess of 40mpg.

Vauxhall Combo-e Life

Like the e-Berlingo, above, the Combo-e Life is Vauxhall’s most affordable, all-electric MPV.

And, again like the e-Berlingo, it’s available with a choice of either five or seven seats.

It’s the seven-seater we’re most interested in here, and the entry-level model is the ‘SE’.

For your monthly leasing fee you can expect a rear camera, 16 inch alloys, dark-tinted rear windows and Vauxhall’s ‘Forward collision alert’ safety system.

Powertrain wise, it’s almost identical to the e-Berlingo, coming with a 50 kWh battery, power of 135 PS and a range of up to 173 miles. Still got range anxiety? Take a look at our guide explaining electric car range to ease your worries.

Ultimately, your decision to go for the Combo-e Life or the equivalent Citroen comes down to which styling you like best.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz

While it hasn’t gone on sale just yet, there’s no harm in whetting the appetite once more for the incoming Volkswagen ID.Buzz.

There’s an MPV variant as well as a ‘Cargo’ van, and the people carrier will have a long-wheelbase option with seating for six or seven people, depending on which configuration you want. Order books officially open this autumn.

The only bad news is that the stretch ID.Buzz won’t actually be up for grabs until 2023.

What you can look forward to, though, is a 77 kWh battery with super fast charging capability, at up to 170 kW, as well as an estimated range of around 250 miles.

Peugeot Rifter

The 5008 SUV from Peugeot can also be had with seven seats, but it’s the more affordable Rifter that comes under the spotlight in this MPV leasing run-down.

There’s an electric version - the e-Rifter - with a range of up to 172 miles of electric driving range.

But the regularly-fuelled Rifter is even more appealing to those on a budget, coming with the option of a frugal 1.5 litre diesel engine that’ll return close to 60 mpg.

There’s also an 8.8 inch infotainment touchscreen, DAB radio, and a full colour reversing camera fitted as standard.

Ford S-Max

When you think about Ford MPVs, your mind might immediately jump to the Ford Galaxy. But what you might not realise is that the sportier Ford S-Max can also be configured with seven seats, and there’s plenty going for it, not least its smooth, almost coupe-like looks.

Ford says the S-Max is ‘made for life’s adventures’, and it comes stacked with 17 inch alloys, a Ford ‘Synch 3’ infotainment system with an 8 inch touchscreen, cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.

There’s also a host of powertrains to choose from, not least a 2.5-litre petrol engine mated to a full hybrid system, which doesn’t need to be plugged in and which delivers power of 190PS and 200Nm of torque. There’s also a healthy towing capacity of 1750 kg.

Nissan E-NV200 Combi

This MPV might have passed you by, but it makes a great choice as a proper, family, five or seven seat MPV.

As you can probably gather from the title, it’s fully-electric, coming with a 40 kWh battery that translates to a range of up to 187 miles between charges.

There’s rapid charging capabilities, up to 50kW, and using a home wallbox will see the battery replenished in around 7 hours.

The E-NV200 Combi is also as spacious as it gets, with 870 litres of luggage space even with all seven seats in place. Hurray, then, for more room to stow the kids’ bikes - or to cram more Scotch eggs into your picnic!
