BMW has launched a new performance variant of its X1 compact SUV - the X1 M35i.
The regular X1 is a rival to lease cars like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 and it’s available with a number of different petrol engines.
This new BMW X1 M35i boasts power of 300 hp and heads straight to the top of the pile as a bona fide range-topper. It also competes with the Audi SQ3 and the Cupra Formentor.
Interestingly, though, this new BMW X1 M35i isn't actually the most powerful X1 available. That honour goes to the plug-in hybrid 30e, which has power of 326 hp.
But the BMW X1 M35i is the most rapid, covering 0-62 mph in just 5.4 seconds, while the hybrid 30e lags ever-so-slightly behind at 5.6 seconds.
And the X1 M35i has also been configured for pure ‘driving pleasure’, while the 30e is built more for comfort than speed.
All-wheel drive is a given with the M35i, as is a mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle, M-specific chassis technology, and the option of M Compound brakes.
There’s also sharper styling both inside and out, with flared side skirts, a front apron, two pairs of exhaust tailpipes at the back, and the option of adding M Sport seats with an illuminated M logo.
A 2.0 litre petrol engine has twin turbochargers, peak torque of 400 Nm and is mated to a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch and ‘M Sport Boost’ - which gives you a rapid burst of power when you need it.
Standard fit for the BMW X1 M35i xDrive is adaptive M suspension, which helps you find a balance between agility and long distance comfort. It also sits 15mm lower than any other X1.
Elsewhere you can expect 19-inch alloys, a BMW ‘Curved Display’ - ie, a pair of 10.25-inch and 10.7-inch wrap-around screens - and safety systems like front-collision warning.
The BMW X1 M35i will be available to lease later this year, with first deliveries arriving in November 2023.
In the meantime, you can lease a more sedate BMW X1 from £431 per month* with Select Car leasing.
