BMW is working on a Coupe version of its Z4 Roadster - and here it is in all its glory.
For now, the two-seat concept is a one-off and being shown-off at the swanky Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023 in Italy, on the banks of Lake Como.
But BMW has form for this sort of car, and it could very well see the light of day in the future.
Rewind to 1998, and BMW was three years in from the launch of the old Z3 two-seater.
And the German firm stunned the world by launching a Coupe version of the Z3 - essentially sticking an estate-style, ‘shooting-brake’ boot onto the back.
Some critics weren’t impressed, quickly labelling it ‘clown shoe’ or ‘bread van’. But, somehow, the Z3 Coupe worked. It’s gone on to become highly sought-after, with M models being sold for close to £50,000 on the used market right now.
So, is BMW about to pull a similar trick with the Z4?
The emphasis here is on creating a car that’s both light, nimble and sporty, but still practical enough to be a capable grand tourer. After all, you don’t get a whole heap of luggage space in a typical roadster.
A BMW spokesperson says: “The design highlight of the BMW Concept Touring Coupé is its sculpted rear end. Created from the flowing contours of the roof, which merge seamlessly with the rear side panels, the shape accentuates the car's athletic shoulders, while the flat rear window and clearly defined body surfaces emphasise the vehicle’s solid stance. Viewed from the side, the BMW-typical interpretation of the shooting-brake proportions is clearly recognisable. The long bonnet, streamlined roof contours and powerful rear section form a distinctive two-box design, while the elongated side window graphic with the Hofmeister kink and flared rear wheel arches underline its sporty elegance.”
The ‘Hofmeister kink’, by the way, is the trademark BMW ‘notch’ in the far-most lower corner of the rear windows, which has a rearward/forward angle.
The BMW Concept Touring Coupé has 21 inch alloys at the back, 20 inch rims at the front.
Meanwhile the interior is super luxurious, featuring ‘precisely crafted leather surfaces from Italian manufacturer Poltrona Frau’.
No word yet on what engine BMW has put in the Concept Touring Coupé, but it’s likely to feature the 340 hp petrol mill from the Z4 M40i.
