BMW revives the M4 CS

BMW has thrown the sheets off its brand new M4 CS, which will start accelerating onto race circuits and roads later this year.

In case you’re not fluent in BMW performance model speak, here’s a quick sit-rep.

We’ve not seen an M4 CS - aka ‘Competition Sport’ - car since around 2020, when it was discontinued after just a few short years in production.

But that’s all about to change when this new, more powerful M4 CS joins the party in the autumn of 2024.

While it sits a cut above the regular BMW M4 Competition, the CS won’t be the top-rung M4 available, as that honour goes to the raucous, lightweight M4 CSL that was launched a couple of years ago.

And BMW says it’s the CS’s job to straddle a tricky line between precision track day dynamics and everyday comfort - which is a difficult skill to pull off.

While the regular M4 Competition gets 530 hp, the M4 CS ups the power ante to 550 hp and 650 Nm of torque courtesy of a 3.0-litre straight six engine.

A 0-62mph acceleration time of 3.4 seconds beats the similarly all-wheel drive M4 Competition coupe by just 0.1 of a second. The top speed of the special edition is electronically limited to 188 mph.

The BMW M4 CS is priced from £117,100, while the regular M4 Competition Coupe starts at £90,845. So what else are you getting for your dosh?

There’s model-specific chassis tuning and - like with the more hardcore, two-seat CLS - some weight-shedding has gone on, aided by numerous components made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

There’s a fancy titanium exhaust system that which promises an ‘emotionally stirring soundtrack generated’, according to BMW.

In SPORT and SPORT+ modes, the engine note gains ‘unmissable racing car undertones, injecting aural drama during gear changes and the accompanying adjustments in rev speed’, adds the German manufacturer.

Putting the power down is an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, all-wheel drive ‘M xDrive’ with rear bias, and an active M differential.

Forged light-alloy wheels - 19-inch at the front, 20-inch at the back - and track tyres are fitted as standard while carbon ceramic brakes are an option.

Meanwhile the M4 CS gets its own distinctive look and style, both inside and out.

There’s a unique kidney grille with red contour lines, ‘M4 CS’ badging all round, and distinctive headlights with yellow light flourishes.

The cabin gets M Carbon bucket seats in Merino leather, an Alcantara steering wheel, M seat belts with contrast stitching, and various bits of carbon fibre trim.

Crucially, for a car that’s designed as much for the school run as it is the circuit, you can also expect BMW’s ‘Curved Display’ that comprises a 12.3-inch digital cockpit and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen, two-zone air con, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a full suite of driver assistance and safety features including park assist and front collision warning.

And, of course, you can customise the vehicle’s set-up to within an inch of its life, with settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive.

Order books for the M4 CS open at the end of May with deliveries anticipated at the back end of this year.
