The new fully-electric BMW i4 breaks cover

Here’s the first glimpse of BMW’s mega-anticipated new all-electric i4 - a car that’s set to do battle with the Tesla Model 3.

While precise details about the i4 are still limited - as we wait for further announcements in the coming weeks - we know enough to be excited. It is, essentially, an electrified version of the BMW 4 Series, complete with sporty looks and a classic 4 door Gran Coupe shape.

There will be a full line-up of trim levels and models, with an electric range of up to 366 miles. And with a power output of up to 530 hp, the BMW i4 will be capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in around 4 seconds.

While that’s almost a second slower than the quickest Tesla Model 3, there’s more range with the i4 and the BMW is a bigger car, meaning better practicality.

BMW also has a great track record in dialling-in the suspension to create the perfect ride, so you can expect the i4 to handle well, too.

Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales, says:

“With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric.”

A full production model of the i4 is expected to be available this autumn, and we’ll keep you posted about any further developments.

The BMW electric revolution shows absolutely no sign of slowing down, either.

There’s an electrified 3 Series on the way, which should really set the cat amongst the pigeons, and BMW is clearly thinking about the future of the entire motoring industry. A spokesperson adds:

“The success of the BMW Group has always been based on long-term thinking and responsible action. The company set the course for the future at an early stage and consistently makes sustainability and efficient resource management central to its strategic direction, from the supply chain through production to the end of the use phase of all products.”

We’ll bring you more details as and when we get them.
