BMW have tried to persuade more drivers of main stream, cars to take a turn upmarket when it launches a new bigger multi-purpose 2 Series Gran Tourer this summer.
NEED TO KNOW:
- First seven seater premium compact car for families
- Offers up to 1920 litre load volume with rear seats down
- CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometre
Ford’s C-Max and Volkswagen’s Touran are being targeted as conquest models for the 2 Series Gran Tourer, which is a bigger version of the Active Tourer, the brand’s first MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) was launched last year.
BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is capable of carrying seven occupants and with versatile packaging; representing a radical departure for the German firm and a significant fresh business opportunity in the corporate sector.
BMW’s team seems very confident and about 4500 units are expected to be to registered in the next 12 months, 40% are likely to go to corporate customers. BMW says, the 2 Series Gran Tourer will offer a very attractive proposition for premium buyers who wanted seven-seat practicality in a premium package.
Comparing to 2 Series Active Tourer, the Gran Tourer is slightly longer and marginally taller; it looks and feels much bigger inside and out. Second row seats slide a full 13 centimetres to provide limousine standard legroom and extended luggage space from 645 to 805 litres. Folding all the rear seats down, it opens up a huge, van like 1905 litres of cargo space in the most capacious BMW yet.
Retaining excellent practicality, the 2 Series Gran Tourer offers a luxurious interior as a 7 Series and has an impressive list of standard equipment list that includes an automatic tailgate, satellite navigation, twin-zone automatic climate control and novel three-way split fold backrest arrangement that allows easy access to the rearmost seat row.
The 2 Series Gran Tourer is packed with aerodynamic technology for optimum operating economy and quieter running handling even on twisty roads. It will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel options to its buyers. The 216d seems the most efficient model in the range, offering fuel economy of 68.9 miles per gallon and CO2 emissions of 108 grams per kilometre.
