From the Audi RS2 Avant to the R8 supercar, Audi’s Sport GmbH performance division has served up some spectacular motors.
And now the team is celebrating 40 years of setting pulses racing with a special event at Germany’s infamous Nürburgring circuit.
Audi Sport GmbH (the ‘GmbH’ bit stands for ‘Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung’, or 'limited liability company' in English) first took root back in 1983.
Back then the division was primarily concerned with protecting Audi’s ‘quattro’ name and marketing rights, and also starting selling sporty accessories - including mountain bikes - to customers a year later.
But by 1994, Audi Sport GmbH - formerly known as ‘quattro GmbH’ - had produced its first car in the form of the stunning Audi RS2 Avant estate (below).
Since that point on, Audi Sport GmbH has had a hand in every RS Audi produced - including the RS 3, RS 4, RS 5 and the RS 6 - as well as the show-stopping R8 and countless motorsports vehicles.
One recent highlight was the electrified Audi RS Q e-tron prototype, created in 2021 for its first participation in the legendary Dakar Rally (below).
Audi Sport GmbH also designs the sports suspension and exterior bodywork that appears on Audi S-Line models - so you might have leased one of the division’s products without even realising it.
Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Audi Sport GmbH, said: “Audi Sport GmbH has written a real success story over the past four decades. With passion and team spirit, many exciting high-performance projects have been developed to production readiness, emotional customer experiences have been created and great successes in motorsport have been achieved.”
Managing Director Sebastian Grams adds: “We have a clear goal: to successfully carry the sporting DNA of the four rings into the electric future. The company has remained true to itself over all these years, has always been courageous and dared to do new things. This spirit of innovation still characterises us today. We want to shape the future of mobility in the high-performance segment in a sustainable and progressive way.”
You can lease the RS Q3 Sportback with Select Car Leasing from around £771 per month*, while the Audi RS 4 can be leased from around £786 per month*.
