Audi teases ‘Skysphere’ concept

Here’s another look at the innovative, shape-shifting Audi Skysphere.

We first reported on the Skysphere last year when it was first unveiled.

And now the all-electric head-turner has been shown-off in the UK at the Greentech Festival in London.

The Skysphere immediately grabs your attention because of the way it looks.

But there’s another reason to give it another inspection - because it features a state-of-the-art ‘variable wheelbase’ system, which can actually lengthen the car by 20cm, and increase the ride height by 10mm, at the touch of a button.

It is, then, two cars in one and able to transform from an agile roadster into a more comfortable grand tourer whenever the mood takes you.

An Audi spokesperson says: “Taking shape as a spectacular roadster, the Skyphere is a fully electric two-door grand tourer fitted with automated driving technology.

“Designed for maximum freedom it provides two intense driving experiences: sporty driving of an agile roadster with short wheelbase and first-class comfort of a grand tourer with an extended wheelbase.”

The interior is crammed full of sustainably-produced materials and has a level of swankiness Audi says is typically reserved for ‘first-class aviation’ passengers.

It’s all wrapped-up in an Art Deco-inspired design package, too.

The Skysphere is set-up for fully-autonomous driving - whenever such a thing is allowed in the UK - and the steering wheel and pedals even disappear into the body when the car’s brains takes the reins.

At the heart of the Skysphere is a battery-electric system that provides massive amounts of power - 632 PS - and 750Nm of torque, enabling it to sprint from 0-62mph in four seconds.

The relatively-modest 80 kWh battery also gives the Skysphere a range of more than 310 miles between charges.

Will the Skysphere ever become a reality? Well, we wouldn’t put it past the good people at Audi.

There’s also a limousine-like ‘Grandsphere’ - a sleek, electric, four-door coupe (below) - in the works, too, so the whole ‘Sphere’ concept might just run and run.

You can watch a video teaser of the Grandsphere on Audi’s YouTube channel.

In the meantime, if you're after for a stunning electric coupe from Audi, look no further than the e-tron GT (below) which you can lease from Select for around £1,020 per month*. There's as a performance 'RS e-tron GT' boasting power of 646 PS and a range of up to 283 miles.

* Prices include VAT. Credit is Subject to Status, Ts and Cs and Arrangement Fees apply. Excess mileage may apply. Stock levels and prices correct as of 12/12/22.
