Slippery Audi A6 Saloon glides in

  • Refreshed Audi A6 Saloon revealed
  • Most aerodynamic ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) Audi ever
  • Joins rebooted A6 Avant estate
  • ‘Business class travel at its best’, says Audi
  • Priced from £50,560
  • Performance S6 Saloon yet to be revealed

Here’s your first look at the slippery new A6 Saloon, the most aerodynamic Audi ever to be fitted with a traditional combustion engine.

The A6 Saloon glides in to join the already-rebooted A6 Avant estate in Audi’s line-up.

And, like the A6 Avant (below), the A6 Saloon is enjoying a major refresh ahead of order books opening in May.

The new A6 Saloon is 60mm longer than its predecessor, which Audi says equates to better comfort on long journeys for passengers.

Meanwhile an ‘elegant and dynamic’ new look gives the A6 Saloon a ‘drag coefficient’ (ie, a measure of how easily an object moves through an environment’) of 0.23, which stands as the best value ever achieved by a series-production model with a combustion engine in Audi history.

It’s not the most aerodynamic Audi ever, full stop, with the electric Audi A6 e-tron Sportback (below) achieving a lower drag score of 0.21, taking the overall bragging rights.

How and why is the Audi A6 Saloon so air friction-resistant?

Audi says there’s a more streamlined body with contoured windows, sleeker headlights, side air intakes, a front bumper spoiler, and underbody panels designed to maximise airflow. New window and door seals also improve noise suppression by up to 30 per cent.

Step inside that cabin and Audi says you’ll be met with a ‘business lounge’.

You’ll see an Audi MMI panoramic display - a thin, free-standing display with a curved shape using OLED technology. It consists of the Audi virtual cockpit with an 11.9-inch screen and the 14.5-inch MMI touch screen.

In Edition 1 models (see below), these are complemented by a 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display which lets them access websites and stream video content without distracting the driver.

The A6 Saloon gets a 492-litre boot (only slightly down on the 503 litres you get with the A6 Avant) and standard 40:20:40 folding rear seats.

At launch in the UK, the new A6 Saloon will be available with two engines – one TFSI petrol and one TDI diesel. Both get power of 204 PS. The diesel automatically comes with quattro all-wheel drive, the petrol does not.

The 2.0-litre diesel unit features mild hybrid technology, courtesy of a 1.7 kWh battery, which enables partially electric driving at low speeds - like when parking or stuck in city traffic. And you’ll be able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.9 seconds, aided by 400 Nm of torque.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine has a start-stop system as standard to reduce fuel consumption and is available exclusively with front-wheel drive. It’ll take you from 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds.

The new A6 Saloon also gets brake-by-wire tech for the first time. The brake pedal and brake hydraulics are completely decoupled and a control unit instead calculates how much braking force needs to be produced by the friction brakes at any given time.

There are three main trim levels; Sport, S Line and Edition 1. Details of the performance Audi S6 Saloon are still to be revealed.

Entry-level Sport variants get 18-inch alloys, standard suspension, Matrix LED headlights, twin leather front seats, 4-zone air con, Audi’s curved display, wireless phone charging, self-parking capabilities, and safety tech like adaptive cruise control.

The S Line models add larger 19-inch rims, lowered (by 20mm) Sport suspension, unique exterior styling, a sport flat-bottomed steering wheel, and black headlining.

The range-topping Audi A6 Saloon Edition 1 boasts 20-inch alloys, the ‘Black’ exterior pack, dark chrome exhaust pipes, red brake callipers, and sport seats clad in Dinamica and leather,

Adaptive air suspension with electronically controlled damping, which can prioritise ride comfort or handling agility, is an optional extra on quattro specified models.
