There’s a new entry-level, more affordable Audi A3 in town, as the German manufacturer has introduced a frugal 1.0-litre petrol engine.
The Audi A3 - in both ‘Sportback’ hatchback and Saloon form - enjoyed a major overhaul earlier this, arriving with a fresh look and improved tech levels.
Now this week sees the introduction of a revised ‘30 TFSI’ petrol mill with power of 116 PS and which Audi says ‘becomes the entry point to the A3 line-up’.
It also cuts the price of the A3 to £28,920 to purchase outright when paired with a manual gearbox.
You can lease an Audi A3 with that 1.0-litre engine with Select from £331 per month*.
With the new powertrain, you can choose between a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic gearbox, and it’s available in either ‘Sport’ or ‘S line’ trims, both of which have been enhanced as part of the A3’s upgrade.
The powertrain joins the existing 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel units found in the 35 TFSI and 35 TDI each offering decent power of 150 PS.
It’s not the quickest A3 by any stretch, covering the first 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds. If performance is what you’re after, look to the S3 variants, which come with power of 333 PS and which can whip from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds.
Later in the year, a ‘45 TFSI e’ plug-in hybrid Audi A3 will also join the party, with details on electric range still to be announced.
Audi says standard-issue kit with the very latest versions of the A3 include 17-inch alloys, three-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors with parking aid, a collision avoidance assistant, and a fancy 10.1-inch touchscreen alongside a 10.25-inch virtual cockpit.
Models higher up the trim levels feature everything from decorative fabric inlays to 19-inch alloys and sports suspension.
As an all-rounder, the Audi A3 is hard to beat. But it still faces competition from long-standing rivals including the Volkswagen Golf, BMW 1 Series and SEAT Leon.
