Aston Martin’s first fully-electric vehicle will launch in 2025, the British firm has confirmed this week.
As things stand, there’s currently no Aston Martin EV.
The nearest we’ve come to it is the new plug-in hybrid Valhalla supercar, which is set to enter production next year.
Now, though, Aston Martin has revealed it has just received a £9 million funding package from the government, through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC), as part of its ‘high-performance electrification strategy’.
And in making the announcement, Aston Martin has also dropped a picture of its modular battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform - with the unmistakable silhouette of a coupe and SUV drawn over the top of it.
Could the first Aston EV be an electrified version of the Aston Martin DBX SUV?
Meanwhile Aston Martin says the electric platform it is designing - dubbed ‘Project ELEVATION’ - also has the ‘bandwidth’ to be used on a supercar, too.
Roberto Fedeli, Group Chief Technology Officer of Aston Martin, said: “The award of funding from the APC is another major boost to our electrification strategy and constant strive for innovation. Providing further resources to explore the possibilities of our bespoke BEV platform, it will help achieve our ambition to be an in-house BEV technology leader in the ultra-luxury, high-performance segment. We look forward to progressing this project with our collaborative partners and thank the APC for their incredible support.”
Aston Martin has previously announced a partnership with American electric vehicle company and battery pack specialists Lucid to boost its electric vehicle development.
And while Lucid hasn’t yet launched in the UK, it knows a thing or two about producing luxurious, powerful, EVs.
The Lucid Air has power of up to 1,234 hp - in ‘Sapphire’ trim - as well as a range in excess of 400 miles between charges.
If Aston Martin is to launch an electric SUV by 2025, it’ll compete with the likes of the Lotus Eletre R.
By 2026, all new Aston Martin model lines will feature an electrified powertrain option - with the long-term objective for its core range to be fully electrified by 2030.
