Citroen has unveiled its new e-C4 X - an ‘affordable’ all-electric family car with a range of up to 223 miles between charges.
There are a couple of things to note here.
Firstly, the ‘e’ before the ‘C4’ obviously denotes that it’s a battery-powered alternative to the traditionally fuelled C4.
And the ‘X’ element is also important - because the e-C4 X ditches the SUV crossover styling of the regular C4 to adopt more of a swooping, fastback, saloon shape.
It’s an eye-catching choice for Citroen and one the French firm says makes an ‘elegant alternative to the mass of hatchback and SUV offerings in the volume compact car segment’.
The e-C4 X is powered by a 50kWh battery pack that offers decent grunt at 136 hp and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 9.5-seconds when you put it into ‘Sport’ mode.
The 223 mile range exceeds that of the Mazda MX-30 - which has a range of 124 miles - and is about on a par with the new Kia Niro EV.
The e-C4 X also supports rapid charging at speeds up to 100 kW, which means you can take the battery from 0-80% full in just half an hour. Using a regular 7.4 kW wallbox, a full replenish time runs to around 7.5 hours. Make sure you get the most out of every charge by picking your ideal charger.
The e-C4 X is also built for comfort.
You get Citroen’s ‘Advanced Comfort Seats’, which are nice and wide and have extra padding and lumbar support, as well as LED ambient lighting and the option of a panoramic sunroof that opens at the touch of a button.
The e-C4 X also gets an improved infotainment system borrowed from the more upmarket C5 X and which has a 10 inch touchscreen with ‘Hello Citroen’ voice control.
There’s plenty of room in the back, even for more lanky passengers, and the e-C4 X has a large 510 litre boot which trumps the space offered in cars like the Ford Focus or the new Honda Civic e-HEV.
There’s also a whole host of driver assistance and safety systems available, depending on which trim level you choose. They include Active Safety Brake, Level 2 autonomous driving with adaptive cruise control and a lane positioning aid, as well as blind spot monitoring and a quirky ‘Coffee Break Alert’.
Vincent Cobée, Citroën Global CEO, said:
“Many customers have told us they want an affordable, responsible and elegant alternative to the mass of hatchback and SUV offerings in the volume compact car segment, and this is our best interpretation of that need – a forward-looking, distinctive cross design that delivers all the comfort, technology, safety and value you expect from Citroën, but also outstanding roominess and limousine versatility, with the benefit of zero-emission, all-electric power.”
You’ll be able to order the Citroën ë-C4 X early in 2023.
