The Tonale is Alfa Romeo’s attempt to muscle-in on a market dominated by the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA - and here’s everything you need to know.
Priced from £38,595, the Tonale is the cheapest car in the Alfa range, proving more affordable than the Giulia saloon. That’s also good news for lease customers looking for inexpensive monthly fees.
And because it’s a hybrid - the brand’s first electrified powertrain - it should be wallet-friendly to live with on a day-to-day basis, too.
While a full-on plug-in hybrid model has been promised by Alfa, for now you’ll have to make do with a frugal mild hybrid.
A 1.5 litre petrol engine is married to a 48-volt ‘P2’ electric motor to generate overall power of 160 hp. It’s not particularly quick, getting from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds, but it is economical, returning around 46 miles to the gallon.
The electric engine is capable of powering the wheels even when the internal combustion engine is off, offering what Alfa calls an ‘authentic hybrid driving experience’.
The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-dry-clutch automatic transmission.
There’s also a brake-by-wire system for regenerative braking and Dynamic Torque Vectoring to give the Tonale planted handling.
As standard across the range, the Tonale comes equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a six-speaker sound system and wireless charging pad.
No matter which trim level you go for, you can also expect dual zone air conditioning, automatic headlamps with dusk sensor and automatic high-beam, auto wipers with rain sensor, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and electric folding and heated exterior mirrors.
The list of standard driver assistance and safety systems is impressive, featuring intelligent adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking.
Speaking of trims, there are two main levels - base ‘Ti’ followed by the more swanky ‘Veloce’. But there’s also a ‘Speciale’ launch edition to consider, too.
The Ti Tonale enjoys 18 inch alloys, black cloth seats and leather steering wheel.
The Veloce adds larger 19 inch rims, privacy glass, Brembo brake callipers, aluminium pedals and shift paddles, black and red Alcantara upholstery, and an uprated suspension system.
And here’s where it gets really interesting.
The Speciale launch edition is actually the cheapest of the bunch - but mirrors the look of the Veloce, features a ‘Dark Miron’ body kit AND adds even larger 20 inch alloys.
In terms of value, the Speciale is where it’s at.
The Tonale is available in a host of colours - Alfa White, Alfa Red, Alfa Black, Misano Blue, Montreal Green and Vesuvio Grey. A leather pack is available on all trims to enhance their standard interior offering.
