Alfa Romeo has leaned on its rich race heritage to launch new ‘Quadrifoglio Super Sport’ models of the Giulia saloon and Stelvio SUV.
Just 275 of the hot Giulias and 175 of the Stelvios will be produced globally, making them ultra-desirable limited editions.
And Alfa Romeo has also blacked-out its iconic logo for the first time in more than 100 years to celebrate the occasion.
But first, a history lesson!
The new Stelvio and Giulia Quadrifoglio Super Sport pay tribute to a very important car from Alfa’s past - the 6C 1500 Super Sport (below).
This is a car that won the notorious ‘Mille Miglia’ back in 1928 - a gruelling 1000-mile competitive Italian road race from Brescia to Rome and back again.
The Mille Miglia was a notoriously dangerous affair that brought spectators out in the millions while claiming the lives of 56 drivers and spectators in its 30-year history. Having launched in 1927, the Mille Miglia was brought to a tragic halt in 1957 following a particularly brutal year in which 11 people - including nine children - lost their lives, with the Italian government ultimately banning all motor racing on public roads.
For the full story of the infamous 1957 Mille Miglia, check out the 2023 movie Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz.
So, for the 6C 1500 Super Sport to triumph in this so-called ‘most beautiful race in the world’ (seeing as it passed through some of Italy’s most picturesque locations) holds a special place in the hearts of Alfa enthusiasts.
For Alfa Romeo, it also was the first in a string of 11 victories in the Mille Miglia, a record that will remain unbroken.
The new Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Super Sport acknowledges that fact.
The cars themselves each get a 2.9-litre V6 engine producing power of 520 hp and a specially-tuned mechanical limited-slip differential to offer the ‘true Alfa Romeo driving experience’.
That’s the same engine you get with the regular Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio - with 0-62mph going by in around 3.9 seconds.
The cabin is awash with 3D carbon fibre with a red weave and the front headrests get an eye-catching logo with red stitching and black numbering.
An Alfa spokesperson tells us: “From exclusive aesthetics to technology and on-board connectivity everything is designed to offer the typical Alfa Romeo driving experience. The instrument binnacle featuring the historical cannocchiale design, including the fully digital 12.3-inch TFT screen, allows access to all the car’s data and the settings for the autonomous driving technologies. In the Quadrifoglio, on top of the three layouts available across the Alfa Romeo line-up – Evolved, Relaxed and Heritage, the exclusive Race configuration is also offered.”
That ‘Race’ layout includes a tachometer, speedometer and shift-light for manual driving, and can also be customised according to the driver’s tastes.
Prices to buy outright begin at £82,815 for the Giulia and £91,835 for the Stelvio.
