If the ballistic Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio simply isn’t ‘hot’ enough for you, you’ll want to get your hands on this stunning new ‘GTA’ version instead.
But if you do want one, you’d better move quickly as it’s limited to just 500 units.
The Giulia GTA is based on the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which is itself a performance version of the standard Giulia.
The Quadrifoglio comes with a 2.9 V6 BI-TURBO engine producing 510HP and an extremely healthy 0-62mph sprint time of 3.9 seconds.
The Giulia GTA, however, ups the ante further.
It uses the same 2.9 litre V6 but has been tuned to produce 540hp and which takes the 0-62mph acceleration time down to a rapid 3.6 seconds.
There’s a liberal use of lightweight materials, giving the GTA a ‘best-in-class’ weight-to-power ratio of 187 hp per litre.
And just like the historic Giulia GTA from 1965, there’s a huge emphasis here on sophisticated aerodynamics to improve handling. There’s also an even more hardcore GTA model - the GTAm - which features an uprated exterior shell to boost aerodynamics further.
Incredibly, the GTAm is said to have ‘triple’ the downforce of the Giulia Quadrifoglio.
An Alfa Romeo spokesperson explains:
“The aerodynamics have been designed to increase downforce. These solutions embody technical expertise that comes straight from Formula 1, courtesy of the synergy with Sauber Engineering.
“They also developed the side skirts; the new rear spoiler – adjustable to four positions on the GTAm; the active front splitter, which can be extended for use on the track by up to 40mm on the GTAm; the carbon fibre rear diffuser with integrated titanium Akrapovič centrally mounted exhaust system; and the 20-inch wheels with single locking nut, seen for the first time on a saloon, which are paired with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The aerodynamic research in the wind tunnel was not limited to the aerodynamic elements, but also focused on the fully-faired underbody.”
The full-fat Giulia GTAm offers a two-seat configuration with road-legal rear roll bar, while the Giulia GTA features five seats resulting in fun for the whole family.
Inside the cabin, there’s Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard, door panels, glove compartment, side pillars and the central trim on the seats.
Alcantara is used even more extensively on the GTAm, where the removal of the rear seats leaves room for specific compartments, which are also upholstered in Alcantara, for helmets and a fire extinguisher.
An Alfa Romeo spokesperson adds:
“The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA brings back one of the legends of motoring and a milestone in the brand's history: the 1965 Giulia GTA. It sees a return to the roots of the brand established 111 years ago, those of the worlds of performance and touring, with a model that epitomises the unique ability of Alfa Romeo to combine style and sport.”
The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm are available to order now, priced from £151,969 and £156,274 respectively.
