- New AC Cobra GT Coupe heading for production
- First official Cobra coupe in firm’s 123-year history
- Clubsport Editions get 799 bhp
- Priced from £325,000
A venomous new AC Cobra GT Coupe has slithered into view - and it’s an historic moment for an iconic British company.
AC describes itself as Britain’s oldest active vehicle manufacturer, with a heritage that dates all the way back to 1901.
The Cobra - an evolution of the AC ‘Ace’ - was the car that put AC on the global map and was also a vehicle adored by the late, great designer and racer Carroll Shelby.
Last year AC, now headed by Swiss entrepreneur David Conza, revealed the open-top Cobra GT Roadster (below).
And now the muscular and curvaceous Cobra GT Coupe has entered the limelight, with a price tag beginning at £325,000.
There are three main variants up for grabs, all road-legal and all absolute show-stoppers. They’ll be built and assembled right here in the UK.
The entry-level AC Cobra GT Coupe is powered by a Ford-sourced 5.0-litre V8 Coyote engine with power of 450 bhp.
The supercharged AC Cobra GT S Coupe takes the power up to 720 bhp.
Meanwhile the track-focused Clubsport Edition - limited to just 99 examples - ups the power even further to 799 bhp while delivering an ‘extremely agile and ferocious road-legal car’.
AC says the Cobra GT Coupe is an evolution of the aforementioned GT Roadster but is also inspired by the infamous AC A98 coupe Le Mans race car from 1964.
David Conza, Chief Executive Officer of AC Cars, said: “The reveal of the AC Cobra GT Coupe is a proud moment for us, and the story of a road-going AC Cobra coupe is one years in the making. To have been able to combine the timeless AC Cobra design into a car using the latest design and construction techniques breaks new ground for AC Cars. This means the limited Clubsport Edition will provide an incredible, racing car-like experience on either the road or the track.”
Customers can expect a distinctive Kammtail rear end, a lightweight chassis built for competitive use, and a near perfect 50:50 weight distribution for optimum handling.
