- VW ID.7 Pro S sets 584-mile range benchmark
- Feat achieved at Nardo test track in Italy
- Range well in excess of 436-mile official figure
- Not ‘real world’ driving - but still impressive
The super-sleek VW ID.7 can travel up to 584 miles on a single charge, according to a new efficiency test on track in Italy.
The fully-electric ID.7, a VW best-seller, can be leased with a choice of two different batteries - a 77 kWh ‘Pro’ unit or a larger 86 kWh ‘Pro S’ pack.
Officially, the ID.7 Pro S gets a max range of up to 436 miles, according to the industry-standard ‘Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure’, or WLTP.
However, when VW took an ID.7 in ‘fastback’ saloon form (an ID.7 Tourer estate is also available) to the ‘Low Speed Ring’ in Nardo, Italy, the long-legged EV was able to go much further than that.
When the battery in the ID.7 finally ran out of juice, it had clocked 584 miles (941 km) - exceeding its ‘combined’ WLTP range by almost a third.
The test car was an unmolested example of the ID.7 which had rolled straight off the production line with zero modifications.
But some caveats are needed here…
Temperatures were at a relatively balmy 15 degrees C, with lower temperatures obviously having an impact on EV range.
The ID.7’s average speed was just 18 mph (29 km/h), which VW says corresponds to typical rush hour speeds in large cities (the German firm cites slow-moving traffic in Hamburg and Amsterdam as examples).
Still, it’s an impressive feat by VW and the ID.7 - and it might just convince you to consider leasing one, particularly if range anxiety is an issue or if you’re in the market for a mile-munching company car.
The ID.7 Pro S also charges rapidly while on the road thanks to a DC capacity of up to 200 kW, which can replenish the energy in the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 26 minutes.
Martin Sander, member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, Aftersales at the Volkswagen brand, said: “We are seeing a positive trend in incoming orders in Europe and are currently selling more ID.7 models than Passat. This shows that the ID.7 is a meaningful all-electric addition to the brand’s product portfolio and, in addition to our successful Passat, is also suitable for long distance drivers and as a company car.”
