Revamped Toyota Hilux launches with sleek GR Sport II pick-up

Seven months on from its reveal, a revised Toyota Hilux pick-up is now on sale, with the Japanese brand showcasing its sporty design and technical updates with the new GR Sport II model.

A black ‘G-mesh’ grille with classic TOYOTA lettering adorns the front of the pickup, alongside an aerodynamically enhanced front air curtain, bumper, and fog lamp bezel design. Black mirrors, side steps, and door handles lead towards a black rear bumper, but there are splashes of colour, with red coil springs and dampers peeping out from under the wheel arches, with red brake callipers hidden behind 17-inch black alloy wheels. A dramatic aero sports bar, silver under-run to the front, black badging and GR Sport branding finish the distinctive style and make it stand out from the crowd.

Inside, the red and black colour scheme continues, with red seat belts over black synthetic suede and leather sports seats, highlighted with silver stitching. Red paddle shifts and aluminium pedals give a nod to the GR Sport’s motorsport influence.

Toyota’s Smart Connect+ multimedia system has now been fitted to the Hilux GR Sport II. The 8.0-inch touchscreen system features cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic updates and even has an offline option in case of weak signal strength. It also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so you can stream your music through the nine-speaker JBL premium audio system.

Technical updates are a little thin on the ground, but Toyota has made some important changes. Monotube dampers replace the previous twin-tube units, and the Hilux has new lighter wheels, all-terrain tyres, and upgraded front and larger rear disc brakes.

The new-look model boasts an improved approach angle, increased ride height, and a wider track. It also has better steering response and reduced vehicle roll, which means better overall handling. There’s also less noise and vibration than with the outgoing model, leading to a more relaxed driving experience.

The GR Sport II is powered by a 2.8-litre engine that produces 204hp and 500Nm of torque, with a six-speed automatic transmission. That power ensures that the revised double cab model maintains its maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg and a payload capacity of 1,000kg.

The Hilux GR Sport II is priced at £49,750 before VAT, with attractive monthly leasing rates. First deliveries are expected to begin later in 2024.

Beyond the headline GR Sport II model, changes have also been made to the Hilux Invincible, with the addition of smart entry, an 8.0-inch multimedia touchscreen, and a reversing camera. Two engine options are available — a 2.4-litre unit with a six-speed automatic transmission (which isn’t available in the Invincible X) or the same 2.8-litre engine as in the GR Sport II, with a manual gearbox.
