CUPRA Born readies for launch

The impressive CUPRA Born is now available to order and lease, with deliveries expected in the spring of 2022 - and here’s everything you need to know about this plug-in head-turner.

First things first, this is CUPRA’s first ever all-electric ‘performance hatchback’.

And we now know that the price starts at £33,735 on the road - which compares extremely favourably to the more ‘vanilla’-styled Volkswagen ID.3, which begins at £32,200.

And, for the time being, there’s just going to be one powertrain available at launch. This will be a 58kWh battery that provides power of 204 PS and gives you a range of up to 263 miles.

But if you hold your horses, you’ll eventually be able to choose from three other powertrains, which will be introduced over the course of 2022.

There will be a more powerful ‘e-Boost’ variant of the 58 kWh battery, offering 231 PS. A larger 77kWh battery will also be offered, which takes power up to 231 PS and increases the range between charges to 335 miles.

But if you’re choosing a lease car while keeping a tight budget in mind, you’ll also be pleased to know that a more affordable 45kWh battery model will also be available, with power of 150 PS and a range of 211 miles before it needs plugging in. It also packs a punchy 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds.

And the good news here is that the 45kWh Cupra Born will be even cheaper than the current £33,735 starting point - which will no doubt translate to cheaper monthly leasing costs.

So, once you’ve chosen the battery that best suits you, you’ll also need to plump for a trim level - which runs from base V1 through to V2 and V3.

Are base spec V1 models worth a look?

You bet they are - because you get a heck of a lot of goodies at the starting point of the range. That includes full LED headlights and taillights, a 12 inch infotainment system with navigation, a 5.3 inch digital cockpit display, adaptive cruise control, front light assist, rear view camera, dynamic road sign display, lane assist, front and rear park distance control, a tiredness recognition system, emergency steering support with turn assist, and front bucket seats.

The V2 trim adds larger 19 inch alloys, dark tinted windows, heated washer nozzles, heated front seats and an augmented reality head-up display.

Meanwhile the V3 CUPRA Born gets all of the above, as well as uprated 20 inch alloys and luxurious heated bucket seats massage function.

And as far as plugging-in the CUPRA Born is concerned, for the 58kWh battery charging from 0-100% takes 6 hours 15 minutes using an 11kW AC wall charger, but it can also be recharged from 5-80% using a 120kW DC rapid charger in just 35 minutes.

A CUPRA spokesperson sums-up:

“Born is both the brand’s first all-electric car, and the second model available exclusively as a CUPRA, following the launch of the Formentor coupe SUV in 2020.
It has already been announced that it will be joined in 2024 by the electric SUV, Tavascan, and in 2025 by the small urban electric car, the concept was named UrbanRebel.”
