This is the brand new BMW X2 - and, for the first time ever, a fully-electric iX2 variant is here to join the party.
The X2 has been around since 2017, a car BMW describes as a ‘Sports Activity Coupe’, but it has also been on hiatus for a year pending a revamp.
And this is the result. It’s a significant refresh that sees the BMW X2 growing in size, gaining a much more aggressive front end, and also looking more athletic and coupe-like than ever before.
Here’s what you can expect from both the BMW X2 and the BMW iX2.
Deliveries are due to begin in March 2024.
BMW X2
As we’ve pointed out above, the new BMW X2 looks very different compared to the last time we laid eyes on it.
It has gone all ‘flared wheel arches’ and ‘muscular shoulders’, according to BMW, having clearly been down the gym.
The X2 has grown by almost 20 cm in length and it also sits wider on the road, making it appear more menacing.
There’s also more space in the cabin - with increased shoulder, elbow, and kneeroom - while the boot has expanded by 90 litres to measure 560 litres.
The front end gets a modern, unmistakably-BMW kidney grille set up, topped-off with LED headlights, while the rear features sleek spoiler
From launch next year, you’ll be able to order the BMX X2 in ‘sDrive20i M Sport’ form, which costs from £39,365 to buy outright.
A 1.5 litre petrol engine, supported by mild-hybrid tech, gives power of 170 hp, 280 Nm of torque, and a 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds. That’s not particularly quick, but does mean you’ll be looking at fuel economy of around 47 miles to the gallon.
The cabin takes its inspiration from the much swankier electric BMW iX. BMW’s ‘Curved Display’ with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and 10.7-inch control display is standard. You can also choose the optional ‘BMW Digital Premium’ package, which lets you game or stream videos using a range of apps.
Sat nav, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, automatic tailgate, and a reversing camera are all fitted as standard, too.
BMW iX2
The new iX2 will slot neatly into BMW’s range between the smaller iX1 and the larger iX3, and it’ll compete with premium rivals like the Kia EV6 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Two electric motors and a 64.8 kWh battery means very decent power of 313 hp and 494 Nm of torque.
The 0-62 mph acceleration time is a cool 5.6 seconds - which is ever so slightly slower than the mid-range, all-wheel drive Ford Mustang.
BMW quotes a range of between 259 and 266 miles between charges, depending on conditions, which falls short of the 314 miles you’ll get in the equivalent Kia EV6, or the 341 miles you can travel in the Mustang Mach-E.
DC charging up to 130kW can boost the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 29 minutes.
BMW X2 M35i
This is the X2 you need if you crave performance - the rapid, all-wheel drive BMW X2 M35i xDrive, which does battle with sporty SUVs like the Audi RS Q3 and the Porsche Macan.
A 2.0 litre petrol engine generates power of 300 hp and peak torque hits 400 Nm.
And it means the BMW X2 M35i xDrive sprints to 62mph in 5.4 seconds, all while emitting a ‘rich-sounding’ noise from its quad tailpipes.
But as you can see from the above, it’s only marginally quicker than the BMW iX2.
A seven-speed Steptronic transmission has a double clutch and built-in mechanical limited-slip differential to ‘maximise traction, handling stability and cornering dynamics’, says BMW.
You can also expect adaptive ‘M’ suspension with frequency-selective damping as standard, and it also drops the ride height by 15mm compared with the bog standard X2.
Other sporting details include prominent side skirt extensions, black M exterior mirror caps, a model-specific M rear spoiler, and a rear apron with diffuser inlay.
Inside the cabin, the BMW X2 M35i xDrive gets sports seats, an Alcantara-covered instrument panel, and lots of other style flourishes.
