8,000 miles of motoring adventures!

One lap of the circumference of mainland Britain, three complete Route 66 journeys, or half way down in a pole-to-pole driving mission.

As you can see, 8,000 driving miles can take you a long way.

And that’s why we’re excited to offer our electric vehicle (EV) customers 8,000 miles worth of free electric vehicle charging.

The offer comes thanks to Select Car Leasing’s amazing partnership with energy supplier OVO, a major player in the green energy sector, with expertise in green tariffs, renewable sources, smart meters, heat pumps, solar panels, boiler upgrades and - of course - electric vehicle charging.

The idea is really simple.

First of all, lease a qualifying EV - or a selected plug-in hybrid - with Select.

Secondly, you’ll need to have OVO as your home charging energy supplier. If you’re not already with OVO, it’s a doddle to switch, and the whole process typically takes between 4 to 6 weeks.

Lastly, once you’re all set up with OVO, select the energy provider’s ‘Charge Anytime’ tariff add-on. The OVO Charge Anytime tariff lets you charge your EV at home for just 7p per kWh, at any time of day or night. That works out at around 2p a mile. It’s a market-leading rate.

And by doing all of the above, you’ll automatically get a £140 credit sent to your OVO energy account.

How does that £140 of free home EV charging equate to 8,000 free driving miles, exactly?

Well, the average electric vehicle can journey for upwards of 4 miles per kWh (with kWh being a unit of electricity). Some EVs are even more efficient than that, with the entry-level Tesla Model 3, for example, having an efficiency of 4.7 miles per kWh of energy.

So, £140 worth of home charging at 7p per kWh equates to 2,000 kWh of free energy. And with an EV with an efficiency of 4 miles per kWh, you’re talking about 8,000 miles worth of charging miles.

The precise figure will depend on your car, driving style, and the road conditions, but it’s a good rule of thumb.

Another thing to point out is that you’ll need a modern, compatible EV smart charger to make the most out of the offer.

To put all of this into context, here’s an idea of what 8,000 miles of driving can look like in reality:

The average annual mileage of UK drivers - 6,600 miles.

According to the latest stats from the Department for Transport (revealed in August last year) private cars in the UK travelled an average of 6,600 miles in 2022.

That’s down on 2014’s figure of 7,900 annual miles, which could easily be attributed to more employees working from home post-pandemic.

So, could you potentially eke-out an entire year’s worth of motoring via the OVO and Select 8,000 miles offer? You could if you only charge your vehicle at home on the cheap OVO ‘Charge Anytime’ tariff, subject to the usual caveats about how an EV’s battery can be affected by ambient temperature and driving conditions.

Circumference of mainland Britain in a car - 5,000-6,000 miles (estimated)

Fancy an epic road trip with a difference?

You could always complete a lap of mainland Britain in your car, racking up around 6,000 miles in the process.

There’s no official route, but you will find stories from intrepid walkers who have made the journey.

The actual circumference of mainland Britain is around 7,760 miles, excluding all of the various islands, but that distance shrinks when you stick to roads rather than going it on foot.

Of course, you wouldn’t be able to charge an EV at home were you to attempt this two-month motoring epic so you’d need to use an app like Zap Map to plan your route and charging stops.

Route 66 - 2,448 miles

America’s iconic ‘Route 66’ is a journey spanning Santa Monica, California, in the west and Chicago, Illinois, in the midwest of America.

Passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, US Route 66 is some 2,448 miles in length.

Which (if you do some mental gymnastics) means you’d be able to complete more than three full cost-free jaunts of the so-called ‘Mother Road’ with 8,000 complementary miles.

Pole to Pole - 18,600 miles

At the end of 2023, adventure-loving couple Chris and Julie Ramsey set a new world record after driving 18,600 miles from North Pole to South Pole… in an electric vehicle.

The car in question was a fully-electric Nissan Ariya with an 87kWh battery and a range of up to 329 miles between charges.

Chris commented: “I’ve always had full confidence in the amazing capabilities of electric vehicles, and I knew our Nissan Ariya would tackle everything thrown at it. But it’s been far tougher than I anticipated. I’m proud that Pole to Pole has reached millions of people in parts of the world and enthused them about embracing EV in their day to day lives.”

After a couple of miserable experiences with main dealerships when buying a new car I found Select Car Leasing. This is my third car from them and always top notch service, no pressure sales tactics and honesty and integrity. Online portal makes it easy to know what’s going on and Charlie was helpful with any questions I had.
