Driving With Pets: Everything You Need To Know

If you're a pet owner, you'll know that finding a car that suits both you and your pets can be tricky. However, some key manufacturers have been putting in the hard yards for us and coming up with some great features for pets- and their owners.

Check out our guide to see how leasing allows you to affordably access these latest innovations and comforts.

Need some extra space to accommodate your pets?

It's no secret that space and safety are key when it comes to finding a car that's best for pet owners, bit manufacturers have taken a more pronounces look at some additional features that can help make getting around with pets a little bit easier

The Nissan X-Trail is a brilliant example of this; not only does it have plenty of interior space and storage to make ferrying dogs around for walks extremely comfortable, but they've designed the first ever dog-centric car kit. 'Paw Pack' is a helpful extra that includes a ramp for small dogs to get into the boot, along with a storage rack and dog guard to increase safety and stop dogs roaming through the car.

What car body styles fit the pet lifestyle?

Of course, you don't have to limit yourself to the SUV sector. The burgeoning range of large saloon and estate cars on the market are proving equally effective for ferrying pets around as they are for transporting the rest of the family and they might also allow you to save on running costs to boot.

The C Class estate and Skoda Superb are two examples that have been widely recognised as two of the best performers in this regard.

Key things to consider if you're looking for a pet-capable vehicle:

Safety

How will you restrain your pet and keep them safe in the car? In a cage/carrier? A caged boot? Seatbelts and other restraints?

Space

What size pet equipment will your boot need to handle? Cages and restraints will need to be appropriate to your pet's size, and allow them to move around.

Easy Access

How easy will it be for your pet to get in and out of the car? If you want to avoid lifting your dog in and out, you'll need to consider the height of the boot and any accessibility equipment you might need to transport.

Cleaning

How can you make it easier to clean away any stains and smells? Look for fabrics specifically designed with pets in mind, or possibly consider seat and boot covers for protection.
