Volkswagen Multivan Review
A flexible, practical plug-in hybrid passenger van for those that need as much space as possible.
The Volkswagen Multivan is the epitome of the word ‘versatility’, providing up to seven seats and an abundance of practical space for those adventures away with friends and family.
With a range of efficient powertains available - including a plug-in hybrid option - the VW Multivan is also perfectly at home on the school run, too.
Read moreThe Multivan replaced the ‘Caravelle’ in the VW line-up.
There are two wheelbase options - standard and long - with two trim levels, Life and Style, plus a model called ‘Energetic’ which was made available at launch.
The good news is that spec levels are high even on the entry-level Life model, including 16 inch alloys, seven seats, two sliding doors with power latching, a Digital Cockpit plus 10 inch infotainment system and front Assist and Lane Assist, among many other standard items.
LED headlights also come as standard but can be upgraded to LED matrix lights should you wish.
Inside, the new Multivan is flexible and spacious, with a new modular, lightweight seating system and an innovative table configuration. The rear five seats are up to 25 per cent lighter than previous VW models and can be moved and removed to suit, while the second row can also be shifted 180-degrees to create a ‘conference style seating’.
There’s 469 litres of luggage space behind the third row of seats, extending to 1,844 litres behind the second row, which should prove more than ample.
When it comes to the engines available, the latest, second-generation plug-in hybrid ‘eHybrid’ PHEV combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 19.7 kWh battery to create power of 245 PS, 350 Nm of torque, and a range of up to 59 miles in pure EV mode. It's also an all-wheel drive '4MOTION' system, with electric drive motors on both the front axle and torsion beam rear axle.
Meanwhile there are other, more traditional, engines available, too, including a powerful and attractive 2.0 TSI petrol with power of 204 PS.
As a rival to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, Peugeot Traveller and Vauxhall Vivaro Life, the VW Multivan takes some beating.
