A sibling to the more powerful McLaren 765LT Spider, the 720S Spider is an elegant and brutal rival to the Ferrari F8 Spider and the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster.
McLaren says the car’s aerodynamically-honed profile has been inspired by nature itself - a teardrop, to be precise - which extends into the 720S Spider’s cockpit, too. Meanwhile it’s also the first convertible to have a complete carbon-fibre shell - called the ‘Monocage II-S’ - so none of the dynamism and handling is lost from the regular 720S.
At the heart of the Spider is its 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8, which provides power of 720 PS alongside 770 Nm of torque. The 0-60mph sprint will take just 2.8 seconds while the 720S Spider will also reach 124 mph in only 7.8 seconds.
Top speed is a simply colossal 219 mph - all to the sound of a thunderous exhaust note that McLaren says that ‘numbers simply can’t describe’.
With such aural pleasure up for grabs, you’ll want to get the retractable hardtop down. This hardtop adds just 49kg in weight when compared to the Coupe and it can be silently stowed by the electric motors in just 11 seconds, and also at speeds of up to 31 mph.
McLaren describes the make-up of the cabin as minimalist, yet luxurious, and the further up the range you head the more extras are unlocked. Top of the range ‘Performance’ models, for example, come equipped with swathes of carbon fibre on the exterior, from the rear fender air intakes to the hood intakes, as well as engine bay ambient lighting, brushed metal gearshift paddles, and carbon fibre flourishes in the interior.
