The 2 Series has its roots in another BMW model, the 1 Series. Originally, the 2 Series was spun off as a more stylish alternative to the 1 Series hatchback and saloon, with coupe and convertible models.
There’s no convertible model any more, but the 2 Series range was expanded with the practical 2 Series Active Tourer people carrier, and its seven-seat sister model, the 2 Series Gran Tourer. These mix loads of family space with a hint of the swish looks of the original 2 Series vibe. All have great quality interiors and some of the latest in-car tech.
The Coupe and Gran Coupe models are more driver-focused, particularly the latest version of the Coupe, which was revealed in 2021.
Independent safety organisation Euro NCAP has tested the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in 2019 and gave it the maximum five-star score. It also tested the 2 Series Active Tourer when it first launched in 2014, and also awarded it five stars, although that rating has now expired as safety systems have moved on.
Still, all 2 Series models come with plenty of the latest safety technology and features. When it comes to practicality, the two-door 2 Series Coupe isn’t for those that need to transport families; it’s more focused on looks and driving experience, although there are small rear seats. If you want to carry passengers then the rear doors of the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be more appealing, and then there’s the practicality-focused Gran Tourer and Active Tourer for regular passenger duties.
Because the BMW 2 Series range is so wide, with four different models, we can’t fit all the details in here. But once you’ve chosen your body styles, you’ll have a choice of several well-specced trim levels and a range of engines. The 2 Series Coupe choices are few at the time of writing, as it’s new, but there’s much wider choice in the other models. If you’re after some zero-emission motoring, then the 2 Series Active Tourer is available as a plug-in hybrid. All other models are offered with petrol or diesel power.
